What frustrates bus riders?

More than 200,000 people per day ride a bus in Miami-Dade, easily making it the busiest arm of the county's mass-transit system. However, not all passengers enjoy the ride. Many have voiced their concerns to the county by submitting complaints to the transit department. The Miami Herald requested 19 months' worth of complaints to see what frustrates current bus riders. What the commuters said

The Miami Herald sorted bus feedback entries into 12 categories and compared them with results from the entire system. It then assigned routes a star rating for each category. The number of stars – one being the worst and three being the best – represents the route's complaint rate compared with other routes in that category. Submissions are published as recorded by the county.

Pax states: This particular morning on the 211 bus . Riders and myself are subjected to this rude , thoughtless , incompetent bus driver unsatisfactory behavior and actions . This day I took the bus which was the drivers first am run to Winn Dixie. I was fortunate enough to catch the bus when it came back , which I was very grateful ... upon getting on the bus I met the bus driver sitting on the bus texting on his cell phone at this time passengers were getting on the bus, the bus driver got off the phone went inside Winn Dixie on his break as he stated, while the passenger sitting on the bus waiting on his return which was about a 25minute wait. when the driver returned back to the bus. I simply stated to him isn't it too early to be taking a break, and I also stated to him others have errands and things to do and he had an attitude of so what... So I called in on this driver and voice my opinion on his actions. He heard me speaking with his superiors, and in return started an argument with me on the bus, as well as when other passengers got on the bus the driver got them involved in the argument which had me very frightened and I feared for my life..The driver still being upset, stopped his bus in the back of a police officer car and at requested the bus driver to the officer , to put me off the bus.... Just because I complained and spoke up about something that I thought was right this driver embarrassed and humiliated me and I also lost money on my groceries.... I suggesting that someone speak to this driver about his stinking behavior..As well as this letter be put in his file for future references of his work performance. About this project

The Bus Gripes database was designed to break down more than 27,000 responses the Miami-Dade Department of Public Transportation received from January 2014 to July 2015 for more than 90 active routes.

Methodology

To determine a bus route’s overall score, the Herald separated all responses into compliments and complaints per 100,000 rides. It then took the difference between those values and compared it with the rest of the county’s active routes. Routes with rates that fell above the county’s top 66th percentile received 3-star ratings. Those in the bottom 33rd received 1-star ratings.

The Herald used the same star-rating scale to score responses by category. It calculated each route’s rate in each category and compared those with the rest of the county’s routes respectively. Routes with fewer than 100,000 rides were not scored due to a high margin of error.
